A safe working copy and a type map for an inherited WordPress site

I made a full local working copy with dated restore points of a surveying firm's inherited WordPress site, and mapped its theme typography into CSS variables.

The firm’s site was built in 2019 by another agency. It ran a classic Bootstrap theme, a page builder, a slider and more than twenty active plugins, with no version control and no style sources.

First I took a database dump of the live site as the fixed starting point. Then I set up a full local copy with its media and paid plugins, and took dated snapshots over the week, so every step could be rolled back. All the work stayed on the local copy, and the live site was left as it was.

With no style sources, I read the theme’s stylesheet and wrote down its typography: the licensed web fonts, and the size and line height of every element from headings to forms, footer and menu. Then I put the whole type system into one ordered sheet of CSS variables. After that the site could be worked on without risk to the live version, and its typography, which had lived only inside an old stylesheet, was documented in one place.
