A Bricks Builder update that broke the layout, and the repair

After a Bricks update the manufacturer's site lost its layout. I found the dropped styles and checked eight pages against the original.

After update
8pages checked

I compared each page with the original after Bricks 1.9.6.1 and fixed the ones that had changed.

Emergency update
1day

The update, the search for the cause and the page-by-page repair, all on one day.

A German manufacturer’s site was built by another developer on Bricks Builder, with a child theme and a custom slider. It had to move to a new version of Bricks, which renamed its layout elements, so pages could shift. WordPress and the plugins needed updating too, and the design had to stay as it was.

I confirmed the scope with the agency and took a full backup before any change. The update ran without errors, but the layout on the front end drifted. Bricks offers a conversion to its new section and block elements. I tested it, and it didn’t fix the problems. So I compared the old and new code, found the missing styles, rolled the update back and restored the styles by hand.

Then I checked eight pages one by one against the original and reported the status of each. I fixed the slider and the active menu item, and the footer on tablet and phone. One product page had a large gap, which came from an older empty container with a 50vw minimum height and had nothing to do with the update.

I handed over a final backup, and in November 2024 I fixed two PHP warnings in the slider with small checks in the child theme. The site came through the update looking as it did before, page by page, and it runs on Bricks with the same child theme.
