A block theme for an events company, and a block that lost its images

I set up the design system of a new block theme, built the brand header and fixed a block that lost its images on save.

The agency was building a new site for an events company on its own WordPress block theme, and I did the theme and the build together with the agency owner.

I started the theme repository and set its design system in one settings file: the type scale, a 1440 px container, colour schemes, corner and width presets, and local fonts. The styles live there, so the editor shows what the visitor will see. In the theme I also built the brand header, with the menu, the brand typeface, the header styles and scripts, and the buttons.

A hero block that lost its images

The big hero block at the top of each page did not save properly. An editor who reopened a page could not change its images, and the content was lost. The block came from the agency’s plugin of page blocks. I reproduced the bug on a clean local install and recorded it step by step.

I fixed the block in its validation and in the way it saves its images. I also added a migration, so blocks already saved on pages got their images back from the stored HTML. The fix and its migration were meant to let editors save the hero block and change its images again, including on pages made before it. The site later went live on another CMS, and it still uses this build’s fonts.
