City pages and a moderated review system for a US service company

A partner agency brought me in to work in a pair with its lead on a US home-services company’s own WordPress theme. The company’s city pages showed no reviews from local customers, and some showed an office address from another city. The service-area list and the city page template needed a new design too.

I rebuilt the service-area list and the city template to the new design as code components, on a local copy of the site. For the address I proposed a rule and left the decision to the client: a city with its own office shows that address, other cities show the state office, and places without one show «Opening soon».

Reviews a manager approves first

I built reviews as their own post type. A pop-up form with a star rating saves a draft, the manager gets an email to publish or delete it, and the city page shows the average rating. I added an email field to the form for the reviewer coupon the client planned, and replaced the gendered avatar with a neutral one.

The agency’s lead reviewed my code and did the PHP 8 upgrade himself, and together we locked the send button against double clicks. After his upgrade I retested the form and reported what I found.

The new city pages and reviews went live on 26 July 2023. Visitors could leave a star rating on their city’s page, and the company decided what got published.
